Imagine a future where the natural world is just a sensational memory
Only the privileged few can access it
From reliquaries of archived scent
With support from UCL Olfactory Heritage, I archived the smell of the South Downs (50.99067760427772°, -0.7501853543792095°) in 2025. I conducted primary research field trips to the area to extract the scent of this vulnerable ecosystem at threat of extinction by the climate crisis, like so much of Britain’s remaining nature.
I created a smell-o-vision film installation of the South Downs. The film featured a glass reliquary box. This was handcrafted by me, using fragments of plants and local chalk, from my visits to the South Downs, to create Ghost Glass, a technique I have devised for preserving the memory of nature through intense radiation. I used hot glass techniques to craft the glass perfume bottle in the form of an olfactory bulb, the part of the human brain that processes smell. Smell is the strongest sense for memory.
The project will go on to explore the potential to digitise the scent I have extracted from the South Downs as a further step of archiving ecosystems at risk of destruction. I will investigate how I can use this data to map the ecological decline of the South Downs.
